Tech-Fund Debate
245.6 million. That’s how many videogames were sold in the US in the year of 2012, versus the 162 million books sold in 2012. We live in a day and age where technology is at its prime, and everyone is using it for almost everything. Videogames have come a long way since when our parents would sit down and play a game of Donkey Kong. They have become more graphic and high tech. Influencing and promoting violence as if it is acceptable and there is no punishment for it. It teaches our generation that it is admissible to waste countless hours playing a violent videogame that is all but a disadvantage to us in the long run. Videogames are promoting violence, lethality of playing these games, long term effects, and the time consumption.
Video game is about bullying behavior in a school setting. There are plenty of psychological brutality and physical violence. The study found that the majority of young male subjects regularly played violent, M-rated video games. What they didn't find was a significant correlation between playing these games and a general increase in violent behavior. Furthermore, Kutner and Olsen found that the motivation for playing video games for most kids isn't a result of reclusive or antisocial tendencies. Kids usually play video games for excitement and escape from boredom and stress. They also note that kids in the study were capable of recognizing and separating real-world violence from fantasy in-game violence. Video games contribute or cause an increase in violent behavior," A research review done by NCTV (1990) found that nine of twelve research studies on the impact of violent video games on normal children and adolescents reported harmful effects video game playing has not been implicated as a direct cause of severe psychopathology research suggests that there is a short-term relationship between playing violent games and increased aggressive behavior in younger.
Also, video games are very lethal. There have been numerous deaths in America and in other parts of the world that have been advocated by video games. Video games are very violent and can encourage kids towards violence or desensitize them to death and killing people. Kids today think that going around with guns and killing people is fun. People that have caused school shootings have said, “Video games showed me how to do this.” Do we really want our youth to know how to kill people? No, we don’t. Also, the addiction to video games could cause people to do things that are just unreal. For example, Tyrone Spellman is one of the worst people you’ll ever read about. A man in love with his Xbox, Spellman went insane when his 17-month-old daughter, Alayiah, accidentally pulled the cords out of the wall. Rather than ensure the child’s safety or just fix things and move on, Spellman cracked her skull repeatedly, killing her. He got up to 47 years in prison for the crime. Another time there was a couple so consumed up in video games that they ended up neglecting their 3 children, to the point where they were in conditions no kid should be in. Conditions of being naked and covered in their own feces, because the kids were not old enough to take care of themselves. You can see from these examples, that video games are lethal to the people’s mind and their health.
There are many long term effects on playing video games such as addiction. Playing long amounts of video games can get you addicted. Large amounts of kids are playing violent video games, and some are able to recognize the difference between fantasy and reality, but some immerse in the violence and it makes them prone to rash decisions. Video games can ruin your relationship with others, because you become so consumed. These games reward kids for violence and teach them that it is okay and acceptable to act that way in real life. “Playing video games could be compared to smoking cigarettes. A single cigarette won’t cause lung cancer, but smoking over weeks or months or years greatly increases the risk. In the same way, repeated exposure to violent video games may have a cumulative effect on aggression.” People who play prolonged amounts of video games may see the word as a more violent and hostile place. Investigators discovered people who played a violent video game for three consecutive days showed increases in aggressive behavior and hostile expectations each day they played. They also found that those who played nonviolent games showed no meaningful changes in aggression or hostile expectations over that period.
Playing long amounts of video games can get you addicted and it is hard to stop playing them. Especially Teenagers spend more time playing games, which denies them there sleeping time or doing other activities. The time some spend in playing games may jump from few to 10 hours a day, which can be used for something more productive. There would be great outcome. Consuming up to 16 hours in playing video game might cause mental break downs. Here are the list of video games that consumes people time, Call of duty, god of war, resident evil, the fallen lords, super Mario 64, metal gear solid, tomb raider, black ops, kill zone, pro evolution, Army of two, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, street fighter, infamous, uncharted, demons soul, prince of Persia, the last of us, grand theft auto, beyond, sky lander , Mario cart, doom, street jam and so on. This list of games is highly addictive and time consuming and can limit a human understanding and the ability to engage in other school or productive activities. Kids frequently spend too much time playing video games alone can foster social isolation. Children who spend more than ten hours on a video game mostly won’t perform as well in school as kids their age who spend less time on video games. Setting limits on video games is extremely important to consider, and checking the total amount of time you spend in front of all electronic screens such as: video games.
In spite of objections from public opinion, many students can't draw themselves away from video games. It seems that the more they are prohibited from playing the games, the more they are tempted to do so. Many students indulge themselves in playing these games. Video games are harmful to both the individual and society in many ways. First, they endanger the young people‘s health. Sitting in front of the computer for hours on end is bad for the player's eyesight as well as his entire physique. Secondly, they distract the young people's attention from their work and study. Absorbed in the games, the player often forgets to go to work or class. Sometimes even if they are at work or in class, they are still thinking of the games they played or are going to play after work or after class. As a result, they quickly fall behind others in their work and study. Thirdly, they lead young people to moral degradation. Some young people are especially interested in games that are filled with violence. If they play these games a long time, they may also settle disagreements through violence, which may give rise to higher crime rate. Therefore, it is time we took effective measures to solve this problem. On the one hand, young people should be made fully aware of the danger of video games. On the other, illegal video game houses should be eliminated, and software producers should be encouraged to make more beneficial video games in the future. From what we have discussed above, we can safety arrive at the conclusion that video games are harmful for teenagers.
This is a great post! i sort of agree with how people can be influenced by video games. It's true but i think you can be influenced in a positive way as well. Their can be educational video games teaching kids colors, numbers, letters.... etc. But if you play violent games then ya you would probably show violent behavior.
ReplyDeleteI think that videogames actually get rid of tension in kids who have anger. Thus making them less violent. I disagree with the bulying part, becuase they probably would have been bullies already anyways. Videogames don't just make you a bully. I do agree with the book statistics, and that there should be more sales of books then videogames.
ReplyDeleteIn the second paragraph, you emphasized on the fact that playing videogames promotes violence in our society, and then you said that kids are capable of distinguishing between real life violence and fantasy in-game violence which means that kids also know that those in-game violence cannot be possible in real life. Also you said that videogames bring an end to friendship because the kid was absorbed in playing the game. But it just the same thing as in studying or reading a book-which you compared with videogames. Nobody likes to be disturbed when he is studying or reading. Therefore, you cannot disturb a kid playing videogames just because he is playing games; he might be learning from the game.
ReplyDeleteI think this was very well said and put together. Although I disagree with the "lethal" effects of video games, I agree with the seriousness of an addiction to video games. I also believe that a case of insanity, the third paragraph, was not do to video games directly. I believe that something else was wrong with the child. All together I enjoyed reading this, it was interesting.
ReplyDeleteWhat does one think when they come to the intellectual topic of right and wrong. An opinion, and morale or spiritual feeling? No, it's not the topic, its the person. A person's personality can define them by there lifestyle. Video games are just one thing a person can be addicted to. Therefore to say that there bad is just blunt, they are what they are, the person makes them bad.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about video games being violent and lethal. They can consume your mind and health, but you have the power over your own mind. You can control how much you play and how you let it “control” you. It is just like a drug, the drug doesn’t do anything, you do it. It doesn’t go into your body without you putting it in. You have to control over your body, nothing or nobody else.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your debate fully. I am also against video games. I thought you had really good information and could explain a lot of it well. You explained addiction really well and had great detail to it. I also liked the point about video games being banned from houses, or at least the illegal ones. You guys did really good on this debate.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything that you said. I agree most when you said that violent video games can lead to bullying and violent behavior. I like how you compared the number of books sold to the number of video games sold. I also agree with your statement of comparing smoking to video games. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteI agree that video games are harmful for children, but I think they can also be beneficial. Video games can become an addiction, but if this hobby is kept in check then I think it is okay for children to play them. I also agree that violent video games promote violence. I believe that violent video games should be monitored by the parents.
ReplyDeleteEmily, i love you, and i always will. This post was so educational, you and your group are so smart. You have some very good points and you did some excellent research. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you.
ReplyDeleteOkay, first of all, your "facts" are way off. This one is a bit ridiculous, but you technically can't say "countless hours" when the console counts it for you, just saying. Second, video games are not the cause of murders, playing a fun, violent video game does not make someone think, "Wow! This must be tons of fun in real life!" and if it does, it's because they're mentally insane or drunk. Third, video games do not make you confuse the difference between fantasy and reality, "Yeah so I was playing 'The Hobbit' video game yesterday and- GANDALF?!" Lastly, parents can't just be saying, "My son is too addicted to this video game and can't stop playing." Well that would be the time where you take action, turn off the console, and set some rules.
ReplyDeleteThis blog was good, but i disagree. I think video games are good for people because it has been proven that video games will make you smarter by stimulating the brain. Even though I disagree with this blog it is very well typed and has good points, good job with this debate.
ReplyDeleteI agree 100% that video games are and can become addicting. I realized there are more video games then books and that stinks. People should limit the amount of games. The only thing I disagree with is that you wont be able to stop playing. There is such a thing as self control, and I think people are capable of doing this.
ReplyDeleteI like your blog. I agree that video games are just a stress reliever. I also like what you said about how playing violent video games make us think that it is acceptable to kill. We also see this in movies. But good job!
ReplyDeleteI found it funny how some of your evidence such as: "What they didn't find was a significant correlation between playing these games and a general increase in violent behavior. " is for the other side of the argument. Also, your reports of parents neglecting their kids are a one in a few million chance. There are over 250 million gamers in the world and if only a few are doing things like that, it is most likely a mental problem not caused by the game itself.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that video games can be very dangerous to kids. The examples you had of neglect were horrific, but it does show us the reality of being obsessed with video games. I am not trying to imply that everyone will become like that, but it is something we need to take into consideration.
